We are lighting candles 1, 2, and 3 as we remember the joy of the season. The story continues in the Gospel of Luke chapter 2. Shepherds are watching over their flocks and suddenly a shining angel appears to them with joyful news. Once they recover from the shock of being involved in a supernatural event they set out on a journey to meet the Savior!
The shepherds encounter with a shining angel initially was anything but joyful! Scripture tells us they were terribly frightened. There they were minding their own business and not only one shining angel made an appearance but a whole bunch of heavenly beings joined the shiny guy! The shepherds ordinary was interrupted in an EXTRA ordinary event that was a life-changing experience!
And suddenly there appeared with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, And on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.”
Luke 2:13-14 NASB
The Christmas season interrupts our ordinary. It alters our routine and upsets schedules. If we are not careful this season can cause us stress an even fear. We probably will participate in activities that are not part of our ordinary routine. Shopping at over crowded malls, baking mountains of goodies, wrapping presents, hosting the extended family, and on and on the list goes.
During this busy and stressful season take some time to “ see Jesus” like the shepherds did. I think that maybe that’s exactly what advent is all about. Seeing Jesus, really seeing and understanding what a baby, a manager, shepherds, angels and all the other Christmas symbols and traditions mean. May we find EXTRA ordinary joy in the season. A deep residing joy that can only come from knowing Jesus!
The shepherds began saying to one another, “Let us go straight to Bethlehem then, and see this thing that has happened which the Lord has made known to us.”
Luke 2:15 NASB
