Bluebonnet Season: A Time of Hope

It’s that time of year again here in Texas, the bluebonnets are blooming! Our Friday adventure took us down county roads in search of the beautiful state flower. As a child I wasn’t very impressed with the Texas icon. My mom always got excited to see a patch of blue out in a field on some dusty road. Sometimes she would pack a picnic lunch and the family would spend the day bluebonnet hunting. While I have always enjoyed road trips of any duration I just didn’t get what all the fuss was about.

Now I get it! They only bloom during the early spring and some consider them winter bloomers! For the average gardener growing them can be frustrating. It seems most folks have a 60% success rate to bring the plant to flower. They are particular about the soil temperature, how much rainfall the area has received, and must have full sun. My grandmother who had a green thumb tried for years to grow them without success! Now when I find a field carpeted with the beautiful flower I understand and appreciate the wonder and mystery of all that had to come together so I could witness the springtime Texas spectacle!

Our Friday adventure searching for bluebonnets coincided with Good Friday. What a great day to search for something so beautiful. I realized that my search for bluebonnets and my misunderstanding as a child mirror my relationship with Christ. As a child I understood that Christ loved me and died for me. As an adult I realize more clearly what that means. I realize the great sacrifice, the passion, and the ridiculous love that compelled my savior to go to Calvary and died on a cross to pay the price for my sins.

I love Bluebonnet season in Texas. For me it is a time of year for Hope and renewal. I do not think it is a coincidence that bluebonnets Bloom at the time of year when we celebrate Easter. Christ’s Resurrection and the empty tomb signifies victory over death have a glorious future for all believers. It’s a time in Texas when there are numerous Bluebonnet festivals and celebrations. I pray that you and I will set aside time to celebrate the Christ this Easter!

The Sovereign LORD will destroy death forever! He will wipe away the tears from everyone’s eyes and take away the disgrace his people have suffered throughout the world. The LORD himself has spoken!  Isaiah 25:8 GNB
